While it\u2019s not the first site in Spain to receive this recognition, it is the first tree-lined urban promenade in Europe to achieve such distinction.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve all heard of the UNESCO World Heritage list, but what does it really mean, and how does a site become part of it?<\/p>\n To start, it\u2019s important to know that the list was created in 1972 during the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage<\/em>. The goal was to safeguard heritage sites considered of exceptional importance in each country. With the mission of preserving locations of outstanding universal value, nations began submitting proposals to be carefully evaluated and potentially added to the list.<\/p>\n Today, the UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than 1,000 iconic locations across the globe. Spain is one of the countries with the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites.<\/p>\n Currently, Spain has around fifty UNESCO-listed sites. As for the capital, a major recent addition is the recognition of Paseo del Prado<\/em> and El Retiro Park<\/em> and their surrounding area.<\/p>\n Thanks to the efforts of the Madrid City Council<\/em>, in collaboration with the Community of Madrid<\/em> and with the support of the Ministry of Culture<\/em>, the city now proudly holds a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The promenade and its environment form a historic landscape of exceptional value, designed in the 16th century as a green space for leisure and rest at the heart of the city.<\/p>\n Since July 25, the area comprising the Paseo del Prado<\/em> between Cibeles<\/em> and Plaza del Emperador Carlos V<\/em>, El Retiro Park<\/em>, and the Barrio de los Jer\u00f3nimos<\/em> is also known as the Landscape of Light<\/em> (Paisaje de la Luz<\/em>). It\u2019s a remarkable route that includes numerous important institutions such as the Madrid City Hall<\/em>, the Bank of Spain<\/em>, the Army Headquarters<\/em>, Casa de Am\u00e9rica<\/em>, the Spanish Congress<\/em>, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum<\/em>, and iconic hotels like the Palace<\/em> and the Ritz<\/em>.<\/p>\n As you walk through the Landscape of Light<\/em>, you\u2019ll also encounter the Stock Exchange<\/em>, the Navy Headquarters<\/em>, the Prado Museum<\/em>, the National Museum of Decorative Arts<\/em>, the Royal Botanical Garden<\/em>, the Royal Spanish Academy of Language<\/em>, the Naval Museum<\/em>, the Church of Los Jer\u00f3nimos<\/em>, and the Royal Astronomical Observatory<\/em>.
